Blindside ("What's going to go wrong in our e-enabled world") collects and links to perspectives on emerging technologies and their information-assurance implications of NGOs, academics and practitioners. Once a quarter the moderators Kable and Vega will present this information to the Cabinet Office Central Sponsor on Information Assurance.

It's not always easy for those inside government to engage with critical friends outside. And very few civil servants blog, for obvious reasons. But it's important on issues like these that there is a good cross-disciplinary dialogue. Blindside is an attempt to do this in a Web 2.0 [with apologies to O'Reilly which claims ownershp of the term] way. But it's just started so please bear with us if there are teething troubles (eg typos, omissions and margins disappearing off to the left) and please send us any comments, corrections and additions.

It's part of a service provided by Vega to Cabinet Office CSIA, and it's an idea by Kable which already does Ideal Government ("What do we want from e-enabled public services").

[edit] Impact and Assessments

As well as describing what's likely to go wrong we add an impact and technology maturity assessment based on

A. Impact level so that:-

(3) Introduction of technology is likely to cause major change to social interaction, lifestyle and/or attitudes and/or likely to cause major financial cost.

(2) Change to social interaction, lifestyle and/or attitudes and/or limited financial impact

(1) Minor social or financial impact. Natural progression/extension to current change.

B. Technology Maturity so that:-

(3) Technology widely in use and accessible.

(2) Technology is in limited use in the wild. Technology still difficult to use/access due to coast/complexity

(1) Concepts only or reproducible in laboratory conditions

The values are reasoned assertions based on the experience of VEGA and Kable. But if you have reason to disagree, feel free to edit them as long as you add a comment about why.

Personal tools

Blindside wiki is the place to collect issues and opinions on future technologies that may have implications for information assurance. Opinions are fine, but need to be clearly shown as such, and referenced to the person or people who holds those views.
